Painting I: Watercolor Apples

The very first project in Painting I is to gain some watercolor skills by painting fruits and vegetables.  The students were told to pick apart the different colors they saw in their edible still life objects and figure out how to layer the colors, look for shadows and consider the shape of the objects.  They learned to be patient and wait for the water to dry.  Some of their fruits look good enough to eat!

Studio Painting: Maps

I collected a bunch of maps from around the school and had the students take them a make a painting-ish from maps.  The ideas that split from the assignment are quite the variety!

7th grade: Islamic inspired tiles

The seventh grade art students began the semester by looking at different geometric designs found in Islamic tile work.  Islamic patterns are often meant to reflect God's perfection though its symmetry and complexity.  The students were given two tiles (one star and one cross -- it's a perfect fit!) and asked to create meaning by representing their own identity with a symbol while using geometric themes found in Islamic patterns and tile work.  One of the tiles was  even chosen to be the design on the BSM christmas card!

Painting I: Recreated Masterpieces

In order to get a good handle on watercolor, the Painting I class chose a watercolor painting they liked, drew it out and tried to figure out the artists' techniques.  I was very impressed with their results!
